Becoming a grandparent can be life altering. It’s very exciting, and yet, reality sinks in very quickly. My daughter is expecting her first child any day now. With the time getting closer and closer, I’m starting to feel old. When I think of grandparents, I see people in their 50s, 60s, and 70s—all of which I’m not. Does grandparent-hood put restrictions on how you live your life? Can I still get the convertible I want, go out dancing, enjoy life? Or am I supposed to stay home, watch the news, and practice my knitting? I’m not ready to be called Grandma or Nana yet. I’ve been pondering my “grandma” name for the past seven months, but I have yet to come up with something fitting.
I’m not one to watch life pass me by. I still have a lot of energy and life left in me. I guess that’s a good thing for my new grandchild. I can still play with them, take them on adventures, and show them the ins and outs of life. I want to be there for all the milestones they accomplish. Becoming a grandparent has also changed how I think about life. It’s like being a parent all over again, even though it never truly stops. You’re going through the emotions of parenthood again. You’re worried constantly about the child, want to give them the best that life can offer, and will protect their innocent little minds with all you have. Becoming a grandparent can be daunting, but there’s nothing quite like watching your baby become a parent to their baby. In those moments I think about all I did right to raise such a nurturing, empathetic, and strong mother for my grandchild.
