It’s the time of year that ghosts and goblins come out to play. Who’s going trick or treating this year? Who’s allowing their children to go trick or treating?
We’ve had so many tragedies hit home this year, so it’s normal to feel nervous about sending your kids out into the dark by themselves. Who can you trust anymore? You may not know the person next door as well as you think you do. Every year it seems that we, as parents, have to keep tightening the reins on our children. Being a mother of two, and as a soon to be grandmother, it scares me to see how drastically our society has changed—or maybe there’s just more coverage with the rise of social media. When I was a kid, we could go trick or treating without supervision. Our parents just weren’t as concerned as we are now. We’re more aware of the dangers out there which has led to us being far more protective. All we can do is teach our children how to protect themselves, how to say no, and to call mom and dad the moment they feel uncomfortable. That’s the good thing about everyone having cellphones nowadays. Everyone is just a phone call away, no matter where they are.
Remember, while you’re out trick or treating, follow traffic signals, don’t block the road, look before crossing the road, and most importantly have a buddy system in place.
Have a Happy Halloween! Remember to be safe and practice moderation when bringing home those buckets of candy. You’ll thank us later!
